The world is entering a defining moment for digital infrastructure. This is the dawn of the agentic AI era, and its success depends on one thing above all else: robust, intelligent, and scalable infrastructure.

It has become a common refrain – getting data governance right is key to a successful AI strategy! This conventional wisdom is very true, but it is not a new problem. For as long as I have been involved in IT, both as an analyst and as a CIO, companies have struggled with wrangling the various data sets across the applications running at the organization.

IDC predicts that AI will have a cumulative global economic impact of $19.9 trillion by 2030, driving 3.5% of global GDP growth. Governments will play a strategic dual role – both shaping policies for secure, impactful, and responsible adoption of AI across industries, and acting as major buyers of AI to transform public programs and services, enhancing operational efficiency and achieving mission outcomes.

At Princess Nourah University (PNU), one of the largest women’s universities in the world, the rise of women in technology and artificial intelligence has become a defining mark of progress. Among the most influential figures leading this transformation is the CIO, whose exceptional work has shaped the university’s digital future and strengthened the role of women in AI-driven innovation.

Nearly four years into the GenAI revolution, many organisations have decisively moved from experimentation to operational deployment. Another sign of this market maturity is the growing emphasis on governance, ethics, security controls, and regulatory compliance, illustrated by the arrival of formalised rules.

An AI-generated operations report lands on the executive team’s desk. It states that revenue in East China grew by 15 percent last month.

The finance director asks a few basic questions. Does the figure include tax? Have returns been deducted? When was the data last refreshed? Which table did the AI use?

Saudi Arabia is entering the most consequential chapter of its digital story. With the $100 billion national AI investment driven by initiatives like Project Transcendence and Vision 2030 nearing its finish line, the Kingdom is moving beyond AI that purely assists, toward AI that acts: autonomous, agentic systems that can plan, decide, and execute with minimal human intervention.

For years, IT teams have worked towards the goal of preventing disruption before employees experience it. The challenge was never a lack of ambition, but a lack of technology capable of continuously understanding what was happening across complex IT environments and acting on that insight in real-time. Agentic AI now offers the possibility of finally closing that gap.

For years, organizations have approached data sovereignty as a compliance challenge. The focus has been on meeting regulatory obligations, satisfying residency requirements, and demonstrating adherence to evolving standards. In today’s cloud-first environment, that is no longer enough.

The networking industry is full of false promises: higher performance with little tuning, security without sacrificing simplicity, and strict enforcement without limiting agility. We keep swinging between extremes, convinced the next iteration of legacy architecture will fix a 30-year-old mess. It rarely does.

The same pattern is now playing out in the AI era.

For years, enterprise technology ran on simple rules: if this happens, do that. It worked, until it didn’t. Today’s businesses move too fast, generate too much data, and face too many surprises for rigid, rule-based systems to keep up. A new kind of intelligence is taking over — one that doesn’t just follow instructions, but thinks, plans, and acts on its own. 

An AI agent updates a supplier’s payment details. Later, someone asks what happened. The business application has one answer: a service account made the change.

That is not an answer. It does not say who requested it, which agent interpreted the instruction, or whether the action stayed inside its approved authority.

Agentic AI is no longer at the pilot project stage in companies. IDC expects more than 1 billion AI agents to be active worldwide by 2029 accounting for 26% of global IT spending valued at 1.3 trillion dollars.

As Vision 2030 enters its final phase, Saudi Arabia stands at a defining moment in its digital transformation. With the world’s attention already turning toward mega-events such as the FIFA World Cup 2034 and Expo 2030 in Riyadh, the Kingdom has added momentum to its drive to build AI, data and automation capabilities at national scale.

As Vision 2030 accelerates enterprise AI adoption across Saudi Arabia, the boardroom question has shifted. Boards are no longer asking if they should adopt AI. They want to know whether they can trust autonomous models once those models are live in production.

As organizations accelerate digital transformation, collaboration technologies have become essential business infrastructure. Meeting rooms are no longer standalone spaces used simply for presentations and video calls. They are connected environments where people, data, cloud services, and business-critical workflows converge.

A New Way of Seeing Cybersecurity

As organizations accelerate AI adoption, cloud transformation, and digital innovation, cyber risk is no longer confined to technology. It exists wherever people, data, identities, business processes, AI, and interconnected ecosystems create opportunities for exploitation.

Very soon, AI agents will be everywhere. For a snapshot of how adoption could evolve, it would be prudent to observe the United Arab Emirates, where early adoption of technologies has become a tradition across both the public and private sectors. While the buoyancy of the nascent UAE agentic AI market is difficult to gauge, one estimate predicts the nation’s overall autonomous systems market, of which agentic AI is a part, could top US$4 billion by 2033.

Technology is transforming the way organisations work, compete and grow. Artificial intelligence, automation and digital tools are reshaping industries at speed, creating new opportunities while also changing the skills people need to succeed. Yet the future of work will not be defined by technology alone. It will be shaped by how well organisations prepare their people to use technology with confidence, creativity and purpose.

Enterprise AI is crossing an important threshold. Intelligence that once sat alongside employees is beginning to enter the operating fabric of the enterprise: observing events, invoking applications, coordinating workflows, resolving incidents, and increasingly making decisions and taking autonomous action at unprecedented speed and scale.

Enterprise AI is entering a more demanding phase. Early experiments demonstrated its ability to generate content, accelerate development, and support individual productivity. The next phase requires organizations to translate those capabilities into changes in how decisions are made, services are delivered, and businesses grow. For CIOs in Saudi Arabia and the wider Middle East, this puts workflow design, governance, and organizational readiness at the center of the AI agenda.

Many of the most useful endpoint tools are local, and that is what makes them useful.

For a developer under pressure, agentic AI delivered through tools such as Claude Code, Copilot, and Cursor, can deliver a strong productivity lift. But installed tools come with inherent risk, as their use may grant them broad access when used in a normal local workflow.

Saudi Arabia is backing its AI ambitions with investments of up to $100 billion as Vision 2030 approaches its target year. That’s a serious commitment, and a bet that organizations across the Kingdom can turn that investment into business value.
