The Agentic Paradox: How Human Skill Becomes Critical Anchor for AI Autonomy
Saudi Arabia is entering the most consequential chapter of its digital story. With the $100 billion national AI investment driven by initiatives like Project Transcendence and Vision 2030 nearing its finish line, the Kingdom is moving beyond AI that purely assists, toward AI that acts: autonomous, agentic systems that can plan, decide, and execute with minimal human intervention.
It is tempting to read this shift as the beginning of a smaller, leaner workforce. The opposite is true. This is the agentic paradox: the more autonomous our systems become, the more sophisticated the people behind them must be.
An agent that acts on its own still needs someone to design its objectives, audit its decisions, and govern it when regulation, ethics, or risk demand a human in command. Furthermore, orchestrating multiple agents requires advanced project management capabilities to ensure strategic alignment and controlling the operational scope. Autonomy does not remove human judgment from the equation; it raises the bar on the judgment required. Low-value tasks disappear; High-value accountability multiplies.
For CIOs across the Kingdom, this reframes a familiar debate. Skilling can no longer be treated as a discretionary cost line reviewed at year-end. In the agentic era, workforce capability becomes critical infrastructure, as strategic as compute, data, and networks. An un-upskilled team supervising autonomous systems is not a saving; it is an ungoverned risk to brand, compliance, and national trust.
The organizations that will lead are those that act consciously. They map every agentic use case to the skills required to supervise it. To do this effectively, leaders must:
- Segment the workforce: Divide teams into builders, orchestrators, and AI-augmented professionals, developing each cohort differently.
- Anchor learning to recognized frameworks: Utilize SFIA, the NIST AI Risk Management Framework, and SDAIA guidelines so that capability is measurable and auditable, not anecdotal.
- Treat orchestration as a discipline: Equip managers with the frameworks needed to oversee AI agents with the same rigor they apply to human project teams.
Saudi Arabia has already proven it can invest in world-class platforms. The next differentiator will not be the intelligence of its machines, but the readiness of its people to command them.
The lesson for every technology leader is simple, and increasingly urgent: you cannot buy an agentic future. You have to train your way into it.
