IDC Utilities Xchange – BACK FROM THE FUTURE
What if we could fast-forward to the utilities industry in 2035 and bring back the lessons learned from a decade ahead?
What additional benefits will Digital Twins unlock that can support making the business case today, as demands on ROI are ever shorter? How will Hydrogen revolutionize ecosystems and collaboration as hard to abate sectors increasingly decarbonize, and what opportunities lie for utilities? Which non-business cased benefits will emerge as Flexibility becomes a cornerstone of the industry?

Overview
As final consumers become more engaged and empowered to have an active role in the energy transition, will they expect to have a more passive role driven by inherent trust in their energy advisors? How much will waste, environmental, and circular-economy services impact utilities’ bottom line?

Powering the Future: Unlocking Consumer Flexibility Through Customer Love
Imagine a world where every household is part of the solution to a fully renewable energy grid—a world where customers are not just passive consumers but active participants in balancing energy demand and supply. This isn’t a far-off dream; it’s happening now at scale. At Octopus Energy, we believe consumer flexibility is the key to unlocking this reality. But flexibility doesn’t come from technology alone; it’s fuelled by trust, engagement, and delivering experiences that people genuinely love. The energy companies that thrive in this transition will be the ones that build deep, authentic relationships with their customers.
To achieve this, we must reimagine what it means to be truly customer-centric. It’s not just about offering the right tariffs or clever apps—it’s about relentless retailing, creating services that seamlessly integrate into people’s lives, and empowering them with choices they actually want and need. This isn’t just a strategy; it’s a movement, transforming consumers into powerful allies on the journey to a cleaner, greener energy system.

Utilities need to center their strategy on business transformation, Asset Management, and process and operations, while mastering their day-by-day execution:

Business Transformation: “Digital and technical solutions and services for third-party utilities”
According to 2024 IDC Energy Insights survey results, European utilities — specifically large ones — want to build on their purpose and capabilities, scale innovation, and elaborate on the platform-based concept by providing services (from outsourcing of certain technical processes to digital solutions and software) to third-party utilities.

Asset Management Innovation: “Image analytics for asset modeling and inspection
European utilities are using image analytics to help with the labor-intensive work of modeling and inspecting their extensive linear assets, which is no longer a niche area of innovation and has a significant return on investment.

Process and Operations Innovation: “Storage and Renewables Firming & DERMS and Orchestration”
